Acharonim
The Gra on Mishlei
25:15
Two kinds of tefillah: asking for the sake of Hashem’s kindness, which no sin can hold back, and asking on account of one’s mitzvos, which the accusers oppose
With patience a ruler is persuaded: when the ruler holds back his anger, through this he is persuaded, for over the course of time one will persuade him. And sometimes, though the ruler holds back his anger, it is impossible to persuade him, for there are people who are hard as bones and refuse to be persuaded; but when one speaks always with a soft tongue and supplications, then he breaks even those who are hard as bones. And this is “a soft tongue breaks a bone.”
That is: HaKadosh Baruch Hu is patient, and because of this a person can put tefillah before trouble. But there are two kinds of tefillah. (1) One asks that HaKadosh Baruch Hu act for the sake of His mercy and His kindness, as it says, “Until now Your mercy has helped us and Your kindnesses have not forsaken us; do not abandon us, Hashem our G-d, forever.” That is: that “until now [it] has helped us” is “Your mercy,” and not for our sake; and that “[they] have not forsaken us” is “Your kindnesses.” And so we are confident that You will “not abandon us, Hashem our G-d, forever.” For if it were on our account, we would be afraid lest sin cause [it]; but when it is for the sake of Your kindnesses, we are not afraid at all, for Your kindnesses endure always. And this is as it says in the Zohar: “He believed in Hashem” (Bereishis 15:6), and he was not afraid even lest sin cause [it]; and this is because “He counted it for him as righteousness [tzedakah]”: that is, all that Hashem gives him is tzedakah, and not on his account at all. And this is “See, G-d is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid”: that is, “G-d,” which is the attribute of kindness: when in His kindness He is my salvation, “I will trust” always “and not be afraid,” even lest sin cause [it]; as it says in Yeshayahu (Yeshayahu 12:2).
(2) The second is one who asks HaKadosh Baruch Hu to act on account of his mitzvos and the kindnesses he has done, as it says, “I have become small [in merit] because of all the kindnesses, etc.” (Bereishis 32:11); and so “Yaakov was very afraid” (Bereishis 32:8), lest sin cause [it]. And this is: when one asks on account of his mitzvos, the accusers hold [it] back. And this is “With patience a ruler is persuaded”: because HaKadosh Baruch Hu is patient, because of this He is persuaded, when one prays to Him. But if one prays that He give for his own sake, there will be many accusers. Therefore it says, “and a soft tongue”: when one speaks supplications and soft words, that is, that He give not on account of his deeds, but only on account of the abundant kindnesses of Hashem. Through this he breaks “the bone,” which is the accusers, so that they have no room to accuse at all, for he does not ask according to his deeds at all.
