Bereishis, folio 37a

“Did you look forward to the salvation?”: like a watchman, a person should look out at every moment for the salvation of Hashem; HaKadosh Baruch Hu waits as well, and the waiting sweetens the judgment and brings the redemption near

And we must explain the words of the master, our holy teacher, where he wrote, “to believe and to affirm that he will come, and not to think that he is delayed.” The explanation: every person must fulfill “Did you look forward to the salvation?” (Shabbos 31a) [that is asked] above. And tzipisa [looked forward] is the language of “I have made you a watchman [tzofeh]” (Yechezkel 3:17): just as a watchman looks and sees at every time and moment that no enemy or foe is coming, so must a man of Yisrael look out, with his eyes and with the imaginings of his heart, at every time and season: perhaps at this very moment the king Mashiach will come. And at every time his heart should yearn for it, and look out for the salvation of Hashem, for the salvation of Hashem comes in the blink of an eye; perhaps this is the very moment, the blink of an eye, of the salvation of Yisrael. Therefore he should have no thought at all of the time being delayed, Heaven forbid, and at every moment he should look out for the salvation of Hashem; “if it tarries, wait for it” (Chavakuk 2:3). And through looking out and waiting for the salvation of Hashem at every moment, you will certainly accomplish much above; and through this you will merit “No eye has seen, G-d, besides You, what He will do for one who waits for Him” (Yeshayahu 64:3): those who wait and look out at every moment. For HaKadosh Baruch Hu too, the supreme King, looks out and waits, only the attribute of judgment holds it back; and by your waiting and your looking out you will sweeten the attribute of judgment and bring the redemption near, certainly. And enough said for one who understands.
